NEGLIGENCE - MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS

Despite significant gains since the enactment of the Federal Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety legislation in the mid-1960's, the annual toll of traffic crashes remains tragically high. In 2001, 42,116 people were killed on the nation's highways and an additional 3.03 million suffered serious injuries. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability for Americans between the ages of two and 33.

Traffic crashes are not only a great public health problem for our nation, but also a significant economic burden. Traffic crashes cost our economy approximately $230 billion in 2000, or 2.3% of the U.S. gross domestic product. This translates to an annual average of $820 for every person living in the United States. Included in this figure is $81 billion in lost productivity, $32.6 billion in medical expenses, and $59 billion in property damage. The average cost for a critically-injured survivor of a motor vehicle crash is estimated at $1.1 million of their lifetime. This figure does not even begin to reflect the physical and psychological suffering of the victims and their families.

Litigation against automobile manufactures is often complex and expensive. Attorney Lee Brown spent the early part of his career defending industry giants against products liability suits. In the early nineties, he made a dramatic shift in his law practice to begin representing those who are severely maimed or killed by needless design flaws. Brown says, "Products liability is largely a situation where a manufacturer intentionally makes a choice, a business decision, to expose someone to harm when it is not necessary. And, it is almost always the result of a cost-cutting measure." Over the past decade, Brown has pioneered innovative legal strategies that have resulted in some of the largest verdicts against auto makers. Brown is regularly consulted by other attorneys across the country for his expertise in the field of motor vehicle litigation.
